Statement Regarding January 17th Postponement of
Kingston Frontenacs vs. Hamilton Bulldogs Hockey Game
Due to Ice Plant Issue
The following summary outlines the situation:
The ice plant is monitored constantly, 24 hours per day, both on-site and remotely when the facility is closed. There are many safety shut offs, limiting devices, and alarm systems in place within the ice plant to ensure that there is immediate notification in the event of a malfunction. Through this system the ice plant malfunction and first alarm were identified early Friday morning.
When the issue with the ice plant was first identified, technicians immediately addressed the issue and worked all day to correct the problem. Throughout the day the ice plant was off while repairs were underway. In order to help maintain the ice, air in the building was kept as cold as possible using steps including partially shutting down the Air Handling Units which control in-arena air temperature, and opening the outside roll-up door to add cold air directly to the ice level of the facility. Ice conditions were normal until later in the day.
The ice surface slowly warmed as the day progressed and as technicians continued deep into the repair efforts. Despite the repair efforts, the temperature at the floor (on the concrete slab) never lowered to the point where the ice sheet was compromised in any way. This determination is made by technicians that are able to easily identify this condition.
When it was determined that technicians would not be able to get the ice plant operating soon enough to properly bring the ice back to the temperature required for game play, and most importantly OHL regulations and player safety, the decision was made for the game to be postponed.
The postponed game will be played at 7pm on Monday January 20 at Leon’s Centre.
